Should Western media shift coverage of the Ukraine war from military strategy to the erosion of democratic values and human rights?
The live disagreement here is not "should human rights be reported?" (that is settled) but whether the strategic-military frame or the democratic-accountability frame should be *primary* in Western editorial choices — that is, whether the war's meaning for audiences is best captured as a contest of power and survival that human rights coverage should supplement, or as a test of democratic values that military coverage should supplement. One pole treats the military frame as essential context without which human rights documentation is misleading; the other treats the accountability frame as essential context without which military coverage normalises state violence and democratic erosion.
